Construction Zones
Helping Protect People Around Construction Sites
Construction Zones are places where drivers need to take extra care.
Road workers and utility crews work alongside moving traffic to build, repair and maintain the infrastructure our communities depend on. At the same time, drivers, pedestrians, cyclists and other road users may be travelling through or around changing road conditions.
Reduced lanes, temporary traffic controls, workers and equipment can all require drivers to slow down, stay focused and be prepared to respond.
The choices we make behind the wheel can have a direct impact on the safety of everyone in and around a Construction Zone.
Construction Zones Help Protect:
Road workers
Utility crews
Everyone travelling through or around construction
Lives Depend on Your Choices
Every trip through a Construction Zone comes with a responsibility to look out for the people working and travelling around you.
Slowing down, staying focused and being prepared to stop can make all the difference.
What Is a Construction Zone?
A Construction Zone is an area where construction, maintenance or utility work is taking place on or around a roadway.
Drivers may encounter workers, construction vehicles and equipment, lane restrictions, temporary traffic controls, reduced speeds, traffic control persons and changing road conditions.
Signs, cones, barriers and traffic control measures help guide people safely through these areas, but conditions can change quickly.
When approaching or travelling through a Construction Zone, pay close attention, follow all posted signs and directions, and give workers and other road users the space they need to stay safe.
Obey the Law
Don’t Speed
Drive the posted speed limit.
Slowing down gives you more time to understand changing road conditions, react to traffic controls and respond safely to workers, equipment and other road users.
Stop When Required
Fully stop at stop signs, crosswalks, and for school crossing guards and traffic control persons.
Follow the directions of traffic control persons and be prepared for temporary stops or changes in the normal flow of traffic.
Never Drive Impaired
Alcohol, cannabis and other drugs can impair your ability to drive safely.
Never drive impaired.
Stay Alert
Focus
Be aware of your surroundings.
Watch for workers, equipment, pedestrians, cyclists, lane changes, temporary signage and changing traffic conditions.
Avoid All Distractions
Construction Zones require your full attention.
Put distractions away and avoid all distractions while driving.
Be Prepared to Stop
Traffic patterns and conditions can change quickly in and around construction.
Stay alert, watch for instructions and be prepared to stop.
Why SAFE Speeds Zones?
SAFE – Streets Are For Everyone was created to encourage safer choices behind the wheel and help protect everyone who shares Ontario’s streets.
The campaign focuses on three types of areas where road safety deserves particular attention:
School Zones | Community Safety Zones | Construction Zones
Through SAFE Speeds Zones, the Ontario Traffic Council is providing municipalities with consistent road safety messaging and ready-to-use resources to help educate drivers and promote safer behaviours in their communities.
At the heart of the campaign is one simple message:
Lives Depend on Your Choices.
Our Shared Responsibility
Safer Construction Zones depend on all of us.
Every time we slow down, stay alert, avoid distractions, obey the law and prepare to stop, we make a choice that can help protect a road worker, a utility crew member or someone travelling through or around construction.
The people working on our roads deserve to complete their work safely. The people travelling through those areas deserve to reach their destinations safely too.
Safe Kids.
Strong Community.
Better Tomorrow.
SAFE – Streets Are For Everyone.
